2010 Top-Selling Manga (cont'd)

Top 10 best-selling manga by series in japan are,

01) One Piece (32,343,809 copies!!!)
02) Naruto (7,409,068 copies)
03) Kimi ni Todoke (6,572,813 copies)
04) Fairy Tail (5,739,526 copies)
05) Bleach (5,204,193 copies)
06) Fullmetal Alchemist (5,165,052 copies)
07) Gintama (3,978,439 copies)
08) Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (3,479,219 copies)
09) Nurarihyon no Mago (3,269,379 copies)
10) Nodame Cantabile (3,246,355 copies)

aside from doubling the figures from last year, One Piece dominates once again. which is totally amazing because from what i understand, in Japan, it's more common for most to read only the JUMP magazines and not buy the tankoubon unless they really want to collect the series.

that's how many people thinks One Piece is worth collecting!

Bleach has been upstaged by Kimi ni Todoke and Fairy Tail. totally predictable since the whole Aizen arc was uber draggy and boring. thank goodness it finally ended! the new arc just started, so it's up to Ichigo "recovering" his shinigami powers to help pull the statistics up for next year.

Nodame is also in Top 10 series. good sales is most likely due to the two movies released this year.

probably why Kimi ni Todoke is doing well too. besides the live-action movie released in September, there was also the anime that ended in late March. i'm so looking forward to season 2 in Winter 2010!

2010 Top-Selling Manga

Top 10 best-selling manga by volume in japan,

01) One Piece #59 (2,593,580 copies)
02) One Piece #57 (2,578,730 copies)
03) One Piece #58 (2,557,356 copies)
04) One Piece #60 (2,492,183 copies)
05) One Piece #56 (2,480,124 copies)
06) Fullmetal Alchemist #25 (1,340,772 copies)
07) Fullmetal Alchemist #24 (1,298,292 copies)
08) Nodame Cantabile #23 (1,241,997 copies)
09) Fullmetal Alchemist #26 (1,214,468 copies)
10) Naruto #49 (1,211,849 copies)

obviously, all the One Piece volumes released this year earned top placings. maybe there should be a competition of "Which is the best selling One Piece volume" instead. wahahahhaha.

and Nodame squeezes in to win one for the girls. MU-KYAA power~

Japanese OLs on One Piece

interesting article from ANN.

Japanese Office Ladies, or OLs for short, were polled on One Piece.
OLs on One Piece

aside from the "which character they want as a boyfriend" and "which character they want to marry", OLs were also asked about who they want as their ideal live-action cast.

OLs on One Piece 02

i wouldn't mind Mukai Osamu as Sanji, and i definitely can see Oizumi Yo as Usopp! Shingo might be a little too old for Luffy though. heehee.

in any case, i totally agree that there shouldn't be any live-action version in the first place. HA!

10 things I love about Japan

1) the Land of Manga and Anime
no matter where you turn, there's always something greeting you in anime/manga form. whether it's people reading the latest manga magazines at the convenience stores, a poster, or even an anime character strap dangling on someone's mobile.

2) Mobile phones!
probably 80% of the population owns a flip mobile. but what is different is the variety of colors to suit each individual person, and the different mobile straps dangling from each mobile. even full-grown men have a strap or two, so you know it's not just the ladies. it's a culture!

3) Service
Japan has by far the best sales service among all the countries i've been to. the people are polite and patient, they really try their best to help you find what you want. and even if you end up not buying anything, they don't lose their smiles and waves you goodbye. you would feel compelled to buy something just to make their effort worth!

4) Disneyland!
thoroughly enjoyed myself there, even with the unexpected rain in the afternoon. i haven't had the chance to try all the rides in Disneyland, so a second trip is definitely warranted. it's no wonder you can keep going back there. definitely the happiest place on earth.

5) Kyoto
it was a hurried 3 days that we spent in Kyoto, which is hardly enough to really explore the place, so i would love to go back and walk through it more thoroughly. i love the architecture, where you can see glimpse of olden japan surrounded by the much newer buildings.

6) Mt Fuji
another place where we had lots of fun. though we couldn't see Fuji-san in its fine glory, clouds totally covered the peak on the 2 days we were there, we totally enjoyed the onsen stay at Kawaguchiko's Sunnide Resort. highly recommend everyone to stay there and enjoy the scrumptious dinner provided. the onsen is a definite must-try, and make your money's worth by going for a morning dip before breakfast!

7) Food
aside from the slightly expensive pricing, the food is delicious. well, except for natto. tried it on my last day there. ugghh. totally agree that it is not everyone's cup-of-tea, mine included. other than that, most other food items were delicious, even the rice taste different. YUMMY!

8) Akihabara
our trips to Akihabara, 2 days in all, saw me and ah gu going back with tons of stuff in our hands. whatever we missed on the first trip, we made up for it on our second trip. ohohohohohoho. but that also means we came back with more than our cupboards can take. =P

9) Ghibli Museum
if you're a Miyazaki Hayao fan, you must go to the museum to feel the magic. the only complaint i have is not being able to take photos inside the building. there's like 101 things i would love to snap photos of! other than that, just by seeing the mock-up of Miyazaki-sensei's animation studio, you will realize how much effort he puts into his hand-drawn animation. the latest Ghibli film, The Borrower Arrietty, has been out in Japan cinemas since July. i can't wait for it to be released in Singapore.

10) Vending Machines
where you can find hot drinks on an especially cold day! very important to have that bottle/can of ocha in your hand! of course, there's vending machines for meals, ties, cigarette and almost everything under the sun. vending machines are also important at restaurants where you just have to give the service staff your meal tickets and hot pipping food will be served to you without the hassle of having to converse to service staff with your minimal japanese.

Anime Marathons after Japan

now that i'm finally finished with the Fall season write-up, it's finally finally time to countdown to Japan!

TWO MORE DAYS!!

i'm sure i'll be doing loads of anime marathons when i come back from Japan, but i'll be more than willing to spend my weekends at home in front of the laptop. hahaha.

TWO MORE DAYS!!

WOOHOO!!

Fall 2010

better than last year, there are 14 new series i'm planning to pick up this Fall.

as per Summer season, i will be blogging each new Fall series as i watch them. all biased opinions ahead, so please don't flame me for what i feel.

all biased opinions are up!

Kuragehime
Tsukimi (CV Hanazawa Kana), a jellyfish-obsessed girl, goes to Tokyo from the countryside, hoping to make it big as a illustrator. she stays in Amamizukan, an all-female complex, where all her roomies have their own "unique" otaku obsessions. Chieko (CV Saito Kimiko) is into Japanese porcelain dolls, Mayaya (CV Okamura Akemi) with Sangokushi, Banba-san (CV Kumai Motoko) with trains, and Jiji (CV Noto Mamiko) with old men.

Tsukimi encounters by a beautiful woman outside her local pet shop who helps her to save a dying jellyfish. beautiful woman goes home with Tsukimi, and she only finds out the next day that "she" is actually a guy, Koibuchi Kuranosuke (CV Saiga Mitsuki), who cross-dresses!

this is the 3rd otaku-orientated series this season, following Oreimo and Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai. and up to date, this is by far my favorite among the 3. the part where Tsukimi is having that "conversation" with the jellyfish is so cute. in case you think there's only going to be one male in the entire show, we still have 3 male characters that are listed but have yet to appear. i'm quite excited to see them soon, because they are voiced by Koyasu-sama, Itou Kentarou and Suwabe Junichi. mwahahahahaha.

posted 12 Oct,

Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai
Keima (CV Shimono Hiro), an avid gal-game player is known as the "Otoshigami" (the Falling God) in the online world for making all the (2-D) girls fall for him in more than 5000 games. he unknowingly accepts a contract from a demon, Elcea (CV Itou Kanae), to "capture" runaway spirits residing in real girls' hearts by making them fall for him, thus filling their hearts with love and forcing the spirits out.

this sounds somewhat similar to Kannagi, what with the random magical being and reluctant male lead. i'm almost sure Shimono-san was chosen because he's a natural at these character types.

To Aru Majutsu no Index II
Toma (CV Abe Atsushi) and Index (CV Iguchi Yuka) are back! as the "living store-room" of the Necessarius church's entire forbidden book collection, Index is still being targeted by individuals and organizations who wants to use the books for their own evil desires. Toma is still a Level 0 esper, even though his Imagine Breaker is enough to deem him useful as her guardian.

besides the return of familiar faces like Misaka (CV Satou Rina) and Himegami (CV Noto Mamiko), there's lots of newbies we can expect in the new season. at least, that's what the OP showed us. looking forward to seeing what other "misfortunes" Toma will be getting into.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru
unlike Kaichou wa Maid, the maids of Seaside Maid Cafe are neither cute, nor moe, and they definitely do not make your hearts flutter. unless you consider fluttering as the heart pounding when a cup of hot coffee is flying at your face. which is probably why the cafe has little to no business too. i doubt anyone would appreciate clumsy waitresses.

the weird thing is, they actually cast Sakurai Takahiro as granny Uki, the owner of the cafe. yes, Sakurai-san. as an old woman. i didn't even know it was him until i was looking at the ANN page. totally surprise here.

in any case, i'm going to continue watching because Irino Miyu is cast as Hiroyuki, childhood friend of Hotori (CV Omigawa Chiaki), and i haven't watched anything of his since Cross Game ended in March.

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo
to help a friend who is spirit-possessed, Haruka (CV Fujimura Ayumi) engaged the help of Yakumo (CV Ono Daisuke), who has a unique crimson red left eye that allows him to see spirits. after solving the first case, they started to work together, albeit unwillingly on Yakumo's part, as strange events starts to happen one after another in their university.

something that ah gu would probably love, a detective series. although it is geared towards a more spiritual nature. i'm just hoping i wouldn't scrapped this after a few episodes.

Togainu no Chi
set in a post-war Japan, the city of Toshima is controlled by a crime syndicate called Vischio. falsely accused of murder, Akira's (CV Toriumi Kousuke) only way to get back his freedom is to enter a battle game called "Igura" in Toshima, where he has to defeat the leader, Il Rey, and destroy the syndicate.

adapted from a BL game, obviously what i'm looking for are the pretty boys. i can only say i wasn't as interested as i would've thought i would be after Ep1. hope the story will start to pick up, much like how enjoyed Uraboku as the story progressed.

posted 07 Oct,

Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge
another sequel from Spring, Ichinomiya Kou AKA Recruit (CV Kamiya Hiroshi) and Nino (CV Sakamoto Maaya) are back with the residents under the Arakawa bridge. hopefully, season 2 will finally reveal the truth behind Nino and how she ended up under the bridge.

i've grown to look forward to every episode of Arakawa. it's nonsensical, but that is also what makes it so damn funny.

Otome Youkai Zakuro
Agemaki Kei (CV Sakurai Takahiro) and his fellow lieutenants are dispatched to fight alongside half-younin girls (half-human, half-youkai's), against out-of-control youkai's in an alternate Meiji era.

the only thing hindering Agemaki from doing his job is that he is terrified of youkai's! he tries to hide it from the girls, especially Zakuro (CV Nakahara Mai) whom he's paired with, but was found out rather quickly when he can't even go to the restroom at night without freaking out at the sight of random youkai's around the house.

now this is a super dark horse and may just be my No.1 favorite for Fall. youkai's, magic, guys in uniform, kimonos and nekomimi girls. you name it, they have it.

as for the romance go-ers (that's me), while the main couple is definitely Agemaki and Zakuro, i'm more interested in what will happen between Susukihotaru (CV Hanazawa Kana) and Yoshinokazura Riken (CV Hino Satoshi).

it's also another series with an awesome cast. besides those mentioned above, there's the likes of Toyosaki Aki and Horie Yui as twins Bonbori and Houzuki, and Kaji Yuuki as Hanakiri Ganryuu. it wouldn't be surprising to me if the female seiyuus were chosen for their singing abilities, as it seems that singing is part of the incantation for the girls before they start fighting.

posted 06 Oct,

Hakuouki Hekketsuroku
Chizuru (CV Kuwashima Houko) is back with the Shinsengumi bishies, Hijikata Toshizou (CV Miki Shinichiro), Okita Souji (CV Morikubo Showtaro), Saitou Hajime (CV Toriumi Kousuke) and many more. we get to see them with a change into Western-styled clothes, although i much prefer the Shinsengumi uniforms from season 1.

another continuation from Spring, i have NO IDEA why they always want to split what would be a perfectly normal 24-episodes series into 2 seasons. Ep1, or Ep13 depending on how you view this, was fantastic in any case. full-fledged swooning is required! for all the guys!

i will definitely be following up with a fan-girl post soon.

Star Driver Kagayaki no Takuto
Takuto (CV Miyano Mamoru) is the new guy at Southern Cross Island and his wish is to experience a fabulous high school life. this begins almost immediately when he saves his classmate Wako from a group known as the "Order of the Glittering Star Cross" who are interested in certain robots in the island.

these robots, called Cybody, are sealed in the island's underground ruins and can only be unsealed by shrine maidens, of which Wako (CV Hayami Saori) is one of them. as it turns out, Takuto just happens to be the "Galatic Pretty Boy", the ONE that can go against the Order, and he comes fully equipped with his own Cybody named Tauburn. if you think it's outrageous enough, you should watch Takuto's transformation sequence. it could have done Sailor Moon proud.

i was all anticipating Ep1 and it was probably THE show i was waiting for. but maybe, just maybe, it was a little too overdone. cos i didn't come out of Ep1 with heart pumping or mind-blowing excitement.

i'm still going to continue watching though. there are just some shows that you need to stick to, to see if they're really worth it. and really, just having Miyano-san as the main lead is reason enough to make me watch this. not to mention the stellar cast of Sakamoto Maaya, Kuwashima Houko, Fukuyama Jun, Ishida Akira, Tomatsu Haruka, Taketatsu Ayana, Miki Shinichiro and Koshimizu Ami.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
Kyousuke (CV Nakamura Yuuichi) who has always been coldly ignored by his younger sister Kirino (CV Taketatsu Ayana) accidentally finds out that she is secretly into eroge. she ropes him not only into keeping her secret but also into her otaku world by forcing him to play ero-games in the middle of the night, all for the sake of getting to know her hobby of course.

as i watched Ep1, all i could think about it how dysfunctional the family would be if Azu-nyan (K-ON!), Alto (Macross Frontier), Kenpachi (Bleach) and Viletta (Code Geass) were sitting at the dinner table. cos that's exactly who the CVs for the Kosaka family are. hahaha.

posted 03 Oct,

Bakuman.
about two guys on their road to becoming mangakas. Moritaka (CV Abe Atsushi) has the gift for drawing but has no ambition in life. in comes top student classmate Akito (CV Hino Satoshi), who doesn't have the drawing ability but do have the literacy talent, and approaches him to be his mangaka partner after he sees Moritaka's sketch of the girl he likes.

i'm guessing we will see lots of manga references throughout the show, since One Piece and Dragonball has already been mentioned in Ep1. and since i've never read the manga before, i wonder if they would get all technical and show how a mangaka actually works in real life.

posted 02 Oct,

Tegami Bachi REVERSE
sequel to last year's series about Letter Bees (AKA postmen) delivering packages while battling giant insects called Gaichuu that roams the land of Amberground. since i don't read the manga, i've only heard that most of the stuff from season 1 are really all filler material.

this time, they are finally going to start the real story with Gauche and Lag. and the former will finally have more screen time instead of just being in the flashback scenes.

What hides behind Apple marketing campaign?

from Mobile Geek Inc, What hides behind Apple marketing campaign?

some abstracts,

"...People love everything what is easy and intuitive. This is the reason, why Apple went so high and succeeded so much presenting iPhone to world. It is obligatory to admit – iPhone brought a lot of new inventions and ideas to mobile phones business. It was great step forward in technology and future of portable devices. And it still is...

...With the statement and game presentation Apple killed many well-known brands. Brands, which were with us, we could say, forever: Nintendo and Sony PSP. But it’s not everything...

...It is all good, people would say, Apple products are good devices, which fit the customers’ lifestyle. But it is not true.

Their device don’t FIT customers’ lifestyle. They CREATE it. They FORCE it. They make customers DEPENDABLE on them. They make people Apple products slaves.

Apple is filling every, even the tiniest, niche in the market and replacing already existing products, services, the same killing other brands. That is what the risk is, competition is competition.

But not here. Apple, with their “amazing, magical and remarkable” products addicts people to their devices and CREATES their lifestyle.

Soon there will be no place for individuality in the world: everybody will be using iPhone to call and text, iPod to listen to music and play games, iMac to work and AppleTV to watch television.

Is this how you want your world to look like?

Wake up and look into the future...
"

and you thought i was the only one who doesn't like Apple.

from what i've read so far, lots of effort has been put in by each of the main cast, including Mizushima Hiro, Satou Takeru, Mukai Osamu, Kiritani Kenta and Nakamura Aoi. all underwent intensive training so that they can play with actual instruments, and more than 30 original songs will be performed during the movie.

wonder if they would retain the Moon on the Water by Maho from the anime.

here's hoping that there is the slightest bit of chance the movie would touch singapore waters.

HIRO!!!

i will try to ignore the terrible long hair he had in Beck since it's required of his character. thank goodness he got it cut off after the movie. *phew*

UPDATE on 26/08,
there's a video uploaded on tudou.com with chinese subs. the quality isn't fantastic, as with most tudou videos, but it's definitely better than nothing.

and i'm going to believe that Takuya is a true One Piece fan. that non of his answers were pre-rehearsed.

Mukuro Rukudo desu!

of course, we all know it was Flan that got him out of the Vendicare Prison.

Reborn ONA

a ONA was recently released that involves the Vongola 10th family going on a trip around Japan.

the highlights, for me, can be summed up in two points;
1) onsen
2) ten-year bazooka

for some reason, the girls end up serving in the onsen ryokan.
